Project Details:

Shared Architecture for eMployer, Student and Organisational Networking (SAMSON)

SAMSON seeks to integrate processes for employer engagement which are currently supported across both partner HEIs in numerous, separate pockets of activity, mostly with low levels of use of technology. It will provide a joined-up experience for Nottingham postgraduates on work placements, for employers and employees interacting with the universities for CPD, and for HE staff developing employer engagement activities. The technical developments prioritise re-using working systems and transforming existing data in real time into open standards, moving via web services. Some ontology work will be provided in one area, to match competences and learning outcomes between academia and business.

Project Summary (from final report)

Improved the effectiveness of postgraduate student placements as a means of HE engaging with new employers supported by technology, including web services.
Validated the technology developed with not one but two different eportfolio systems and demonstrated the savings that can be achieved through shared services, developing lightweight applications and integrations of existing applications or services

Nottingham has considerable experience in and national recognition for delivering and developing XCRI-related services, and has a proven track-record in successful user engagement and instigating change.

CIePD as well as partner HEI Nottingham Trent University are undertaking new PIOP3 projects with PebblePAD and Desire2Learn respectively, to directly support SAMSON. The UoN/PebblePAD project is using an oAuth approach to enable the SAMSON framework to aggregate relevant ePortfolio data seamlessly.

The infrastructure will support both secure and dynamic collaboration. It will be supported in its turn by a security architecture built on a federated approach along the lines of existing work in the HE community using Shibboleth

aims to support data sharing and communications between learners/employees, businesses and different departments in HEIs involved in employer engagement. CIEPD recently finished a LEAP2A ePortfolio interoperability project in their quest for the ePortfolio solution most suitable for integrating data seamlessly with other services. Learners will be linked to the system via the ePortfolio which will use the ‘thin service-based ePortfolio’ approach to operate as a learner-controlled portal.
