ATELIER-D

Achieving Transformation, Enhanced Learning and Innovation through Educational Resources in Design
This two-year project engages seven academic staff plus assistant and steering group in the construction of a virtual atelier that combines well-established practice in art and design education with new opportunities presented by ICT to create a powerful new approach to learning and teaching design. It is founded on the delivery of three core Open University design courses (at Levels 1, 2 and 3) and their integration in a new design programme. The project platform will be OpenLearn, the Open University’s open content initiative plus other elements of the VLE and Web 2.0 tools.

Scalability and usability were key to the effectiveness of technologies used by the OU - both for students and staff. Different levels of support are required which can prove problematic. The Open Design Studio has created interest within the wider Design community. The final report includes useful tables on the effectiveness/scalability of each technology used in the project.

Some evidence that their students prefer the paired down interfaces provided in the OU Design Studio than openly available tools such as flickr.

There is interest from Birmingham and Leicester Uni's in the Open Design Studio. The OU can offer limited hosting support but team need to discuss further their options re this and decide if this will be offered as an open tool. Links are being sent to OSS watch for information on open source developments.

Open Design Studio ODS is not integrated into the main OU VLE yet. Discussed possibilities of developing some kind of widget link and RSS feeds out as no external log-ins are allowed at the moment.

Development of Open Design Studio well underway. It is quite flickr like with a photosharing interface, pinboard areas for comments/captions, info for each block of learning, individual/group/communities spaces.

Familiarization with technology still an issue for students. They have tutorials but the team are still finding issues about how to introduce technologies and for them to naturally embedded and not "bolt-ons".

Team have recognised the difficulty in engaging students with different types of technologies and the issues of more social based technologies (such as FB) and more traditional content based ones.

Scalability for some of their technologies is a concern - particularly Second Life if they have to use it with +1,000 students - no solutions as yet
