Project Details:
COWL
Coventry Online Writing Laboratory
Academic writing is an important and growing discipline worldwide. Research has identified over 60 types of academic writing that are required across just a handful of the diverse disciplines found in the modern university (Ganobcsik-Williams 2004: 13-14). Supporting students—and the academic staff who teach them—in developing the writing skills they need is a major component of promoting student success. COWL builds on the successful experience of the Centre for Academic Writing at Coventry University by developing and extending the pedagogy, reach and diversity of services available, through enhancing capacity via a technology-enhanced teaching and learning environment.

The project ended up using skype with megameeting and riffly to build their online writing lab. A key finding for the team was that any clear guidance and simple tools need to be provided for both staff and students to engage effectively with online tutoring. The team recommend using stable technologies that are easily integrated with existing institutional systems and that anyone engaging in this type of work should have ready access to technical support

At the moment the team are going to use skype and not megameeting for synchronous conferencing. However a final decision will be made after the pilots have run.

Team have also agreed to enhance their existing process maps with the actual technologies they are using.

In terms of shareable resources the team very much see the value is sharing a number of their resources including some of the training courses they are developing. Coventry's reposistory (CURVE) has a publicly accessible area so materials will be made available there and then can be linked to from the design studio.

The team are also started to investigate a pebblepad/moodle export function.

The project is using a free, externally hosted web based service called Riffly for audio and video capture. So far this seems to have worked well and cut out the need for central storage for video/audio files. There has been a moodle plug in developed for Riffly for assignment feedback and the team are currently investigating if it will be suitable for this project.

The team were involved in the AWESOME project and plan to look at how it might be integrated into their system.

The team had thought it might use pepplepad but due to the institutional switch to module they decided that at this time is was more user-friendly to use more moodle tools rather than integrate another system. However they will review using pebblepad after the pilot phase.

The asynchronous modules are being developed and run in moodle

Team have developed a SSO moodle widget, which they will share back to the moodle community. They have to tidy up a bit of code first.
Posted by SheilaMacneill at 2009-11-06 16:15:49
Due to migration to moodle the team have developed a website for some aspects of the project whilst they were upskilling in moodle development.

The institutional VLE has changed from BB to moodle.
