Course Tools

The primary goal of the project is to deploy and evaluate both the Phoebe pedagogic planner (Phoebe) and the KS "Learning Unit Management" Module (LUM) for capturing curriculum designs and supporting curriculum reform processes across the University of Cambridge.

iCalendar	aka RFC 2445. used by talks.cam as an output standard. Also used as an output and input format for Mercury.
XCRI	The current CAP doesn't quite meet requirements, but an extended curriculum design profile might. The aggregator architecture could work very well with the distributed nature of Cambridge University. Looking to capture the right semantics, output later

Technologies

Kuali Student	The team are going to report on their experiences with KS, but won't be using KS as a production system. Mainly because it assumes solid enterprise data sources (some users have dedicated ETL teams)- which didn't fit with this project.
Sakai	Calendar and course information from Mercury and more to be displayed in Sakai
Peoplesoft	It was the intention to integrate Kuali Student with Peoplesoft. Peoplesoft is likely to remain the system of record for student and course information. Kuali Student looks like it might be the platform of choice for further integration with other systems.
talks.cam	A federated events repository. Currently uses it's own database, put the project plans to port it to KS when that becomes possible. Viewable at http://talks.cam.ac.uk/
eventmap	a proprietary timetabling package that is being evaluated at cambridge. Still in the running, but as a number 2
scientia	a proprietary timetabling package, evaluated but decided not to use
unitime.org	Leading timetabling software package. Looks like it will adapt to Cambridge's structure best. Not much appetite just yet for implementation such a system, though
jQuery	Powers Mercury
Google_Apps	Now being rolled out in Cambridge. Linked up to the new Mercury calendar system. Requires manual input for now
Mercury	Prototype calendar system that's being developed right now. Mostly client oriented. Name might change
MySQL	Underlying DB of Mercury

Team are hoping to incorporate more elements from other projects, in particular Viewpoints and OULDI

Team have revised work plan 2011. Kuali student implementation is now longer part of the workplan. The team are now looking at 3 main areas: course information, scheduling support and process support and developing lightweight tools to support these areas.

Original Sakai plan: It is the intention that Kuali Student be integrated with Sakai. The workflow component may be used to surface the curriculum validation process for end-users, if the one in KS does not meet requirements on time.

Original Kuali student plan: Manages key course information that this project introduces to the institution. The current milestone release is not quite production ready (Jan 2010), but a basic public release is scheduled for March. The main task for the system is to hold curriculum information. The workflow component may be used to surface the curriculum validation process for end-users.

Interventions that the project aims to achieve:

1. Create a lecture list at talks.cam

2. Sort timetabling across different parts of the university

3. Surface curriculum design workflow.

4. Facilitate course organisation transfer.

5. Create a repository of course information

Project still at evaluation stage just now in terms of Phoebe, and have also been investigating the LPP.

Agreed to have another call in June once the team have had more in-depth discusions with Kuali (April -08) and the Kuali software is released (June 08)
