Project Details:
Making Assessment Count
This project will enhance curriculum delivery through the development of an innovative assessment feedback process. Simple e-based technologies (specifically blogs and online questionnaires) will be used to develop an integrated process which will collate feedback, guide student reflections and facilitate their use of feedback to improve performance and inform their ensuing aspirations. The emphasis on reflection will enhance the student learning process. The process will also provide a centralised transparent system for staff to share feedback in order to provide better overall guidance to students. Our vision for 2010 is of students who are reflective lifelong learners, ready for the challenges of employment.

The project team, in collaboration with Central Computing Services, is already putting in place a plan to devise a more sustainable and flexible version of the e-Reflect component of the MAC process (this is a self-authoring version known currently as e-Reflect 3.0). This version should both enable better sustainability at Westminster and wider applicability across institutions and subject areas. In addition this version will be available for distribution to any other institution that would like it and will essentially be ‘open source’. Central Computing Services have undertaken to develop this self authoring version of e-Reflect utilising in-house resources and technologies that they feel are ‘core’ to their future model of support for the institutional corporate applications

Although there is good support from the CSS at the moment (particularly at the 'grass roots' level), there is some concern about maintaining senior staff commitment to maintaining and rolling out the system institutionally once the project ends. Discussed various methods to help raise project profile and utilize wider programme supoprt mechanisms to help with this.

The team are planning to create a process model of their system integration and in the first instance will make this available as an asset in the design studio.

e-reflect integrates the central student records system (Tribal), BB and the google form based questionnaire. Individual PDF feedback reports are then emailed to the students. In the next iteration they are hoping to integrate feedback directly to students accounts in BB.

This development has arisen from interaction with and use of output from the TWOLER (https://sites.google.com/a/staff.westminster.ac.uk/twoler/) project (part of the JISC Institutional Innovation Programme.

The first iteration of E-Reflect used mainly existing technology (e.g. blogs within Blackboard, Google forms). The diagnostic questionnaire that students completed after each coursework in e-Reflect version 1 was processed using Excel macros. The macros used are freely available. For version 2 it is planned to link the questionnaire to an SQL database. Student data from the student records system will be integrated with the database using RSS feeds, which should enable more efficient questionnaire processing and report generation.
