Histology and Histopathology: virtual microscopy on-line

The project will assemble sets of digital images and microscope slides for the study of histology and histopathology from four project partners. These will be presented through a virtual microscope and placed on an OpenLearn server so that they will be accessible on-line from any web-browser.

Considerable overlap. Was started by same programmer.

Standards less

Standard Comments
TIFF
original images are in TIFF (high quality). Large files, 1-3GB.

Technologies less

Flash
Used for microscope. recognise that Apple iOS compatibility is an issue, and that HTML5 exists, but is less supported that Flash. Does run on Android
Zoomify
tiling converter that takes large TIFFs and splits in JPEG tiles for display. API links this to Flash for each view (like Google maps)
